I have memories of the pure of joy creating things for no reason when I was a child and invent a lot of ways to play. Since then I promise myself to not forget what it felt like to play. Thats not the best part - I got the chance to see and met some of the most influential artists of my whole practicing art years life! I was literally shaking.

It was the right time and place to be inspired since the semester has started, sigh.

Having the chance to move around as I grew up made me question where is Home. A common view in this is human attachment to geographic space, which in my case, Indonesia. I am recalling all these layers of memories when I was growing up with toys and childhood friends, realizing how I can only recall some fragments of this bitter comfort-relationship of lost childhood with the memory of it as remembrance.

I remember the first time I did a piece using spray paint, I was clueless so I ended up using wall paint instead afterwards. Thanks to NEWONE for encourage me to try again, and so we did a spontaneous wall collaboration at the skatepark. Although you still can see my wobbly lines, but I had fun. For the last drawing project in this semester, we were asked to conceptualize our installation artwork and approach the method towards a professional diagrammatic perspective. Thanks to Gerson for teaching me stuff to do with digital, I did digital manipulation by placing my in-progress artworks on a photograph of TriSpace Gallery that I took (as you can see, I tried). Hopefully I can propose this installation later in the near future to exhibit these series of artworks for real.

To experiment with ways of visually capturing and representing time passing, I analyzed my window view immediately every time I woke up in the morning by taking pictures of it for 10 days in length. That explains the changes of angle, shades and views of every printed photographs and shows how I am very conscious of time passing by everyday.

Book Binding Workshop

Today I had a chance to be an assistant art instructor, Bridget (my senior) in The Argali Project Art Workshop to conduct a Japanese book binding workshop at Singapore Management University (SMU) to teach 7 students from Give and Take (GAT), Singapore. Was helped by volunteers from SMU students to assist each of the students since they are quite challenging to teach.

I feel so happy inside to conduct this workshop since this is the very first time I have ever taught some mentally and physically challenging people to learn something new in art, which is on 'how to make your own sketchbook and design your own cover'.

Happy and excited faces filled the class this morning which is such a good thing to start the month. Thanks God for this wonderful experience :'-)

SAM's Art Garden

Dearest, I'll be sharing my day to day works during volunteering at SAM in the children Programme Space and being artists assistant preparation of Singapore Art Museum (SAM): the Children's Season for the school holidays titled Art Garden which designed to showcase interactive contemporary art by some artists such as Dawn Ng, Geoffrey Drake-Brockman, Sandra Lee, Theodore Watson and Joo Choon Lin showcasing artworks and workshops for children inspired by nature. 14 may - 18 july 2010 at SAM 8Q Gallery, mondays to sundays.

Day 1 + Day 2 what the volunteers did was to create boxes surrounded with different textures where the kids can play and learn during the workshop. Took so much time gluing and cleaning sigh. Also collecting many children's artworks from schools which was far and tiring

Day 3 Other than arranging children's artwork on the Programme Space, I was asked to create kids' coloring sheets using Joo Choon Lin's characters for kids to create stop motion animation. And also friendly illustrations and instructions sheet on "How to create an origami flowers" which kids can refer to using papers provided in Geoffrey Drake-Brockman's Floribots exhibition space.

At the end of every semester, we were given small cubical space to set our finals as well as our studies and set it up as in the gallery with all the descriptions, titles and stuff - just like what I did last semester. So this is how I set up my space for semester 4 assessment.

Looking back to how my last semester's works looks like..I think I developed a lot from the last Self Pin Up Project. This is the phase when I finally, sort of, found my real area of making art which someway all seems to be very soft, calm, silent, abstract, vintage, worn, washed, thoughts, memories and feeling. The truth is, this was the phase when for the first time, I finally began to look at my work as an artwork. Hopefully this point will help me develop better in my future artworks

Meanwhile, I am very excited for volunteering in Singapore Art Museum's festivals and artists workshops and talks during this break!

The Children's Classics

For the last project of this semester we need to create a self proposed project, again I went around memories area but this time narrowed in Child's memories. I personally think that children’s classics have vivid characters, patterns and metaphors that can support imagination. This work is reinterpretation and redefining of classical tales characters with interest in memory to childhood in an adult. The notion of naïve illustration interpretation of the characters as exist in the lost land of childhood, reveals different layers of memories just like seeing old photographs of people on wall.

Thanks God this series was chosen by my College to be external examine by universities in London/UK with the rest of other chosen artworks from Fine Arts 2009 semester 4. Exciting or what!?

I like listening to abstract forms or foreign language music that I don’t understand which strips away off their context but somehow it feels not a must to know the meaning. For the second project of this semester, I would like to suggest the same concept through visuals; since we don’t understand the text we see, it frees us from confines of more linear thinking about the image, thus the text become acceptable as image. Found Objects Assemblage

I have a habit of collecting scraps of writings, photographs, drawings, postcards, antique stuff or really, anything, because I believe any objects held vivid memories of something or someone with it.

Due to that, it is very hard for me to do the 1st project of this semester which asked us to create assemblage from manipulated found objects with the theme of 'growth'. The thing is, I'd always collect stuff from the streets or flea markets but never dare to ruin every bit of it, which everybody seems to be doing.

So I start to question myself, is it necessary to destroy if the object itself has rich character?
Eva Hesse inspired me of manipulating pantyhose to look like spiderwebs and Joseph Cornell inspired me to place all of these objects I found together and install it in a way it looks like an abandoned old desk scene.

And it shows how 'growth' to me is not necessarily means to create biologically or physically growing into something; but its more spiritually and personal, how some things left until it get dusted and rusted through time.

this artwork was the starting point I began to look at my work as an artwork.

Children's classics collection

On this sunday afternoon, while listening to Gonzales' overnight over and over, I went to art store for some vintage-shape woods shopping for my last project, which still is a secret, but it has something to do with children's classic tales.

Anyway, it was raining outside so I decided to wonder around the nearest used book store, until I found this rack full of really, I mean, REALLY old original collection books of children's classics with full illustration. And it was on discount so around like, what, 9$ each!? lucky I know! I bought like 3 of them which are Alice in Wonderland, Robin Hood and collection of classic short tales.

Raindrops

A little sketch I did inspired by the moving clouds I saw outside the window on a rainy saturday, Gerson Gilrandy added his grumpy Mr. Rain which made it even more fun like a silly narrative drawing :-D

Petals

Last sculpture project (about 6 inch tall) inspired by petals, using blue foam as the base shape. I couldn't believe such a simple sketch I did for the idea lead me to cutting and sanding all these petals one by one for hours and days - obviously, very tiring!

but I actually like the raw looking of this piece (picture below) before I cover it all with terra cotta.

Tie-dye Workshop

A bit of sharing on what happened this week: I was picked by my lecturer to lead a workshop to my fine arts colleagues with a theme of Handmade. 3 of my friends helped me to do this practical workshop.

We come up with different ideas such as paper making, sewing and stuff; but I finally decided to do tie-dye in the end, since the other ideas will probably cost much more money and more troublesome with not so much time + its fun

We asked them to bring their own plain white tshirts, and we actually provide the pigments and show time step by step from how to tie, dip in to the colors, and such. Some photos during the workshop:

Thanks for the help and for attending the workshop. It was fun seeing everyone seems to be enjoying it and went home with their own colorful tshirts! My lecturer actually come up to me and congrats me for the successful and fun workshop we held. Hope there will be more next time :-D

Secret Heart

For the third drawing project, which is the last one for this semester, we were asked to pick a song and design a CD album cover inspired by it. The artwork and concept should reflect the theme of the music and ethos of the band. I picked one of my all time favorite singer, (Leslie) Feist, with her remakes of Ron Sexsmith's "Secret Heart" as the chosen song.

I did a minimalist, delicate and sort of surreal approach to reflect her such arrangement for this song. I come up with this lifted female character with pink flower head and with her palms on the chest; to represent the girl on the song that secretly hides her feelings. Flowers meant to represent this delicate blossom feelings she's dying to reveal.

Anyway, try to listen to her beautiful arrangement for this song and at the same time, look at the drawings on this CD cover, maybe it will make more sense ;-)

It's surreal that only he could imagine this kind of wonderland. I can't stop saying WOWs during the movie, for real. And this drawing I did right after I watched the movie. It keeps giving me nonstop crazy visuals in my head.

It was just like another usual sunny sunday, on 21st Feb, I was accompanying Gerson and his friend doing some graffiti painting on the skate park - when suddenly we got a call saying that there's a graphic novelist that is waiting in the Scape Youth Park (which is near to the skate park) and wanted to have a mural collaboration with us....randomly.
When we meet I know I was shivering because of the excitement that I got knowing the artist is Phil Yeh! How can we resist to have a mural collaboration with him? So we did the mural on the exact minute and just did characters on skateboard.

These two girl characters which might be new to you guys are actually developed version of my previous girl character that I often drew

He told us that he was here in Singapore for his mission of Cartoonists Across America & The World, which he had created more than 1800 murals in 49 states and a dozen countries since 1985. The 25 year world tour ends in 2010 and Singapore is one of the lists. We were so luck that we were around at that time because the next day he went to Malaysia for more murals!

It was a random idea when I saw Gerson's doodle of a creature and he asked his friend, Julian, to do his own version of it, I want to try to be scary too! but yeah, I guess I wasn't born to create scary creatures, because in the end it turned out.......obviously, not scary enough! haha failed attempt.

Owl

Just a little update on a small sculpture (about 6 inch tall) that I did for my sculpture class, using clay as the medium.

I have always been a fan of owls, and this piece was inspired by it but I did simplify here and there.

Now I leave it there with the rest of the clays to be bake together.

Hopefully the end result won't crack, even a bit.

And I personally enjoyed every bit of the process, which I thought I wouldn't. It is seriously fun! Hopefully it will be like this with the other mediums I will be working on for the next project.

Oh and happy belated valentine's day, everyone!

Though during the break I did some stuff but I haven't had the time to really catch up yet, so I will update one of my many studies on my personal stuff for recent drawing project.

Satu Gelang, Satu Harapan

Going back to Indonesia during holiday, doesn't mean its time to just seat back and relax while waiting for the 4th semester to come. But I have several projects that I am currently doing which keep me pretty busy.

Couple of days ago I was helping my friend's project by designing the label that will be placed on every hand-made bracelets that he + homeless kids made.

He had this project on teaching a House full of homeless kids for a couple of times, which one of it was teaching how to make this colorful bracelets craft that later will be sold for Rp. 5000.- each.

And after he collects all the money he can get from each bracelets that was sold, will be given 100% to this House, which named Yayasan Ruma Singgah I-HoPe.

because every one bracelet you pay, will eventually help one of those kids.

Faux Green features paintings by the Level 1 students from the BA(Hons) Fine Arts programme, explore the theme “artificial landscapes”. It is an investigation of natural landscapes that have been altered. In this exhibition, landscapes are made ‘artificial’ by the subtle alteration of compositional elements, such as texture, colour and tonal value shifts.

On this exhibition, only 22 students were chosen, and I am one of them (they still manage to picked one of my small paintings, cause I haven't really finish my big painting). Anyways I still think it is a good opportunity to be part of this :-D

Inside: Interior

The theme for the second painting project is about inside. But what inside is depend on our own interpretation of it or whatever our concept is, so it really is a broad theme.

People came out with different interesting ideas and concepts such as inside of a bubble, inside of a toilet bowl, inside of a dead chicken, close up of flowers, inside of polaroids, inside of a vagina, and the lists goes on.

I chose the idea relating to interior, so I picked several photos of inside that I have and I think I should do studies on; like toilet bowl, inside my bathroom and inside of a room. As you can see from my small paintings here, about A3 range-size.

In the end I picked the most personal photo, which I took at Riau, Indonesia. Its simple but yet it really had that dramatic light effect which gave that reminiscent feeling about the place.

Anyways, my reference artists would be Edward Hopper and Matthias Weischer. And my lecturer says that my style reminds her of Luc Tuymans, which you guys should go research on.

Since today is Daniel's birthday, which is my boyfriend's brother. Me and my boyfriend tried to think of an idea to give him a present
But since we are in Singapore, and his brother is in Jakarta - the distance makes it hard.
In the end, we do what we can do and easy for Daniel to receive (sadly, through email and facebook).
So yeah I send him like 2 presents: drawing and illustration. See what my boyfriend created for him as well.

I have live figure drawing class on every monday morning, which we are often to do live drawing of naked figure with any wet or dry mediums on huge papers in like minutes time - not sure its a good thing to start the week or not haha
Anyways, I would like to share one of my many result drawings here for the sake of sharing this rare study experience.

This particular piece was a mix media of acrylic and charcoal on brown A0 paper.

My lecture says, "you are unique, you know, you have that comical style and good in picking out colors that reminds me of Matisse. You have fresh style."

But then again opinions are always subjective, right? I don't know. Maybe you can share me a bit of what you think?

Man-made Landscape

As I promised, I will update about my painting project.

The theme of the first painting project is Man-made landscape where the timing is evening about from 6-7 pm, so it has that warm feeling with tints of oranges and yellows. Which, of course, has to be inspired by Singapore's landscape.

So I took a bunch of photographs in gardens and parks then create 10 studies of those selected photographs on A4 paper, yes, 10.

Then in the end I have to pick 1 one of those 10s which I think most successful, then I paint it on 120 cm x 96 cm canvas using Oil paint. To be honest, I have never ever in my entire life use oil paint before so you can see from my studies (below, I took from my wall studio) I sucked so bad.

Anyways, my style of painting was influenced by the impressionists, but mostly by David Hockney, which you guys should do more research on. I like his idea on bringing space into canvas which inviting viewers to be part of the paintings - and that is also the reason why I pick the one with the stairs.
My first critics went well, its just that I haven't really do the details on the pathways and some part too.

Any more critics or comments, maybe?

Hand Gestures

Drawing hands has always been one of my favorites, but having 50 hands gesture drawing as a week homework is rather crazy and tiring. Yes, yes, this picture above is the finished piece. Materials: white pastel, charcoal, drawing pen and pencil on (about) A0 brown paper.

Maaaan, as if I don't have any more works to do! I still have to finish my man made landscape painting project and continue to the second project, and I also still have graphic novel homework to create comic characters arrgghh!!! but hey of course I enjoy doing all of these.

Oh and by the way, next week will be my critic session day! Wish me all the luck, people!

Customized Qees

Sorry for the lazy late updates, been busy with my painting studio and graphic novel projects.
But about few weeks ago exactly from 14th to16th of august, there was a Toy, Games and Comic Convention here. I went there with my boyfriend and excitingly got a frickin chance to meet Gary Basemen and David Horvath!!!! Anyways, at the same time, we also randomly agreed to do a custom qee toys on that event which some of my friends also did.

we present you Voo & Doo, and yes it was inspired by Native Indian culture which we admire the most.

Although we didn't consider this as a finish product, they put some of the pictures from this activity to their web. Yes, i have always been a toy collector so this is quite an experience! above picture taken from: Otaku House

ON THE WALL exhibition

Since my boyfriend and I like to travel a lot and documented the journey we went through; we thought of having Journal as our theme. Gladly we have the same perspective in things; we wanted our exhibition to be so personal that viewers can actually see our journey through our eyes.

SO for the display, we choose 9 best (we have 18 photographs all together), we purposely bought +2 meter plywood and actually paint it together with acrylic to make it look like a raw wood, we bought the old suitcase in a 'thieves market', create name cards, bind hardcover catalogue and such.

Anyways, during those 2 days of exhibition, we had loads of chats with the viewers and other photographers, got commented on how young folks like us displays our works - they say we were different from others there which were experienced enough, got feedbacks about our photography works which mostly thought we were using film or lomo cameras because of the distinct color style of our photographs.

The underline is, we had such a great new experience together! thanks for those who came and support, and this surely won't be the last ;-)

I am in the middle of doing my specialism final project which I have to create and paint hybrid creatures out of endangered animals with an issue relating to it.

Yes I have decided to take major of Fine Arts in Painting.

And this specialism project, sort of, to decide whether I am capable enough in going to that major or not.

I'm telling you, all the colleagues are superb!!! which made me super afraid, like, can I do this etc
