Debra Raymond
Debra Raymond (1991) born in Cleveland, OHIO (USA), raised in Jakarta, Indonesia, had moved to Singapore by receiving the LASALLE Scholarship '11 to pursue her degree in BA (Hons) Fine arts, LASALLE College of the Arts.
The bombardment of changes that she experienced by constant migration throughout her life creates a perpetual need to address this notion of displacement. While reflecting on her struggles and fascinations about life and people, she continues to investigate social issues that show how her anxieties mingle with hope. Her work has an allegorical look which is comical and naïve, but far from innocent. It tends to exude the duality of being, which at first placid, conveys poignant longing, yet it is cunningly full of angst.
Brought up in a family that has obsessive habit of collecting objects influenced her tendency to compulsively collect and use found objects as material. Debra’s current work revolves around the notion of Imaginative and Pretend play, which shows her ability to create scenarios from imagination as her life coping skills. At the same time this exploration acts as a reflection because of its relevance in the context of today's urban society, which is achieved through experiential involvement and voyeuristic experience of the viewers.
Currently resides in Indonesia and Singapore, she have exhibited her variety of works around both countries, such as Hari Kelahiran Pancasila at Gedung Presidium PA GMNI Indonesia, Gita Nyali - Swara Hati at Galeri Seni Rupa Sukarta Indonesia, Extreme Beauty at Vue Privee Gallery, NOSTRA at Dahlia Gallery, NIXON Art Mosh at the Gallery OldSchool, On The Wall at 2902 Gallery and White Frames at Red Dot Gallery & National Art Gallery Singapore.
